Engineering Manager
General Purpose of Job
The Manager of Engineering directs and guides all activities relating to Parlec Inc. mechanical, programming, design, and R&D program efforts. The selected individual must demonstrate machining and machine process knowledge. They must also provide strong leadership, customer focus, and inspire excellence by keeping teams focused on delivering world-class products and following effective process controls. He/she shall exercise initiative and independent judgment in creating structured engineering design processes that promote effectiveness and efficiency as well as champion, develop, and implement continuous improvement processes. This individual will seek out best in class machining technologies and tools and assembly processes.
The Engineering Manager provides strong machining and technical direction by evaluating and guiding product strategy, design, development, and related activities across various projects and engineering disciplines. They ensure excellence and compliance in project execution through effective project management and inter-departmental collaboration. He/she guides and enforces the ECR process, project planning, and resource allocation and champion’s continuous process improvement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Manages, plans, and directs mechanical engineering activities and staff with overall responsibility for delivering high quality products on time and on budget that meet/exceed requirements.
Establishes high quality standard for department and promotes sense of urgency and accountability.
Analyzes design, test, and feasibility studies of subsystems, assemblies, and their components to identify opportunities for design or time-to-market improvements.
Establishes and implements structured engineering design processes and metrics that effectively measure and improve team performance.
Continuously seeks innovative ways to improve development productivity through the introduction of new technologies, tools, systems, methods, and controls.
Monitors and implements industry best practices to develop techniques to accomplish rapid execution of design related tasks.
Ensures that proper documentation, such as test specifications, design changes and procedures, is provided to the appropriate functional areas.
Selects, develops, and provides guidance, coaching, and mentoring to mechanical engineering, programmers, and design engineering staff, including performance management and evaluations.
Acts as liaison between the Engineering function(s) and Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Quality, Finance, Customer Support / Service, and R&D.
Responsible for resource allocation of staff within work level demands and budgetary constraints.
Participates in developing and managing annual operating budget.
Monitors project status and pursues corrective action, as required in terms of schedules, budgets, priorities, staffing, and work quality.
Direct compliance to daily floor support including programs, set up sheets, in process sheets, and global correction of programming issues.
Directs all design reviews for new product development.
Directs all prototyping activities to support the design and development of new products.
Defines new manufacturing and assembly processes with Mechanical Engineering.
Defines, justifies, specs and implements all manufacturing capital equipment.
Responsible for floor layouts that insure optimized material flow.
Directs the “Early Supplier Involvement” (ESI) process as it relates to Specials.
Oversight of Engineering Change Requests (ECR) process as it relates to Parlec Manufacturing processes.
Drive throughput and efficiency through waste elimination.
Enforce and maintain all engineering processes on compliance with ISO requirements.
Other projects as assigned to achieve Parlec Critical Success Factors.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or 10+ years experience in a related field.
Required Skills and Abilities
High level of analytical and problem solving ability where problems can be very unusual and extremely difficult.
Strong machining and machine process knowledge.
Good verbal and written technical communication skills.
High level of interpersonal skill to work effectively with others.
Thorough knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes.
Proficient in design & manufacturing engineering skills.
Proficient in cost estimating.
Experienced in justifying, selecting & implementing capital equipment.

Ability to provide leadership for Cross Functional Teams.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistics, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situationsumbers.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
